THE DEADLIEST WEATHER ON EARTH ISN'T A STORM – IT'S HEAT
489,000 people die from extreme heat every year. That is more than hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes combined. And this number does not take undiagnosed heat-related deaths into account.

When we picture deadly weather, we picture drama: a hurricane's eye on satellite radar, a tornado tearing through a town, floods swallowing a highway. These are the disasters that dominate the news cycle, prompting evacuation orders and emergency broadcasts. Hazards that receive vastly more attention, funding, and emergency infrastructure.
Heat doesn't work that way. There is no wind to howl, no wall of water tearing down houses. A heatwave arrives quietly, settles over a city for a few days, and leaves just as quietly. By the time it's gone, it will have killed more people than the storm on the evening news — and almost no one will have noticed it happening.
Between 2000 and 2019, the world lost an estimated 489,000 people to heat every single year. Nearly half of those deaths occurred in Asia, more than a third in Europe. And that figure is almost certainly an undercount. Heat rarely appears as the listed cause of death on a certificate. It kills indirectly — by pushing a weakened heart into cardiac arrest, by aggravating a respiratory condition, by tipping an elderly person already living with chronic illness past the point their body can recover from. A death like that is usually recorded as a heart attack or organ failure, not as "heat." The official statistics capture only the cases where the link was obvious and documented. The real toll is higher.

Right now, 1.1 billion people worldwide are facing dangerous heat with no access to cooling at all. 2.3 billion more can only afford inefficient AC that drives temperatures even higher. It is a vicious cycle where more and more frequent heatwaves require more AC, and more AC emissions fuel heatwaves.
This isn't a static problem. As global temperatures climb, heatwaves are becoming more frequent, more intense, and longer-lasting. Heat-related mortality among people over 65 rose by roughly 85% between the early 2000s and the early 2020s. Cities — where concrete and asphalt trap heat in the "urban heat island" effect — are becoming more and more dangerous, especially as more and more of the world's population lives in big cities.

None of this is meant to diminish the danger of hurricanes, floods, or tornadoes — they are catastrophic, and they deserve the resources and preparedness that go into fighting them. But it's worth asking why heat, which quietly kills more people than all three combined, receives so little of that same attention. The damage happens invisibly, inside the body, one degree at a time.
But invisible does not mean less real. If we want to protect the people most at risk — and there is good evidence that most of these deaths are preventable — the first step is to crank the AC down. Yes, it sounds counterintuitive. But AC is one of the fastest-growing drains on the world's power grids. And emissions from power-hungry cooling appliances overheat the planet and put people's health at risk. This is not a solution. And we need a way out.
